Private residents with commercial premises in the ground floor.
London Stone conservation were nominated by Rozz Barr Architects to carry out stone and stucco repairs to the exterior ornate elements of the façade.

 

The architectural ornament of the groundfloor areas consisted of Bathstone. The existing stone was covered in several thick layers of paint, with numerous areas of structural stonework failing.
Closer inspection of the stonework revealed that previously carried out cementicious repairs and filler had started to fail and fall away from the façade.

Cracked and blistering paintwork causing surface corrosion of the stone  were also contributing to the structural failure of the stonework.

Areas of the stonework that were presenting these kind of faults were stripped and any previous cementicious repairs and filler was removed.

Stone suffering from surface corrosion was removed and cut back to a sound base.
LSC sourced a bathstone which matched the original in colour and texture as closely as possible.
Areas of structural stonework were replaced on a like for like basis, with the new stones being doweled into position using stainless steel threaded bar and cramps. The contures of the original were than handworked and finished in situ.

 

The architectural highly ornate elements of the upper elevations, consisted of stucco work.
As with the lower elevation stonework, large areas of the stucco had failed or were missing altogether.

The aim was to replace the missing section of stucco with new to match the existing original, whilst at the same time consolidation any areas of the stucco that were beginning to fail.
In addition to the restoration of the ornate stucco on the existing Fadace, LSC were instructed to create a new full size window, matching the design and finish of the original.

In order to achieve a close match to the original, LSC began by evaluating and establishing areas of the façade that were in good or fair condition.

Operatives than carefully stripped back the layers of paint covereing these sections of ornament to uncover the original crisp detail of the stucco work below.

LSC operatives then prepared to take silicon press moulds of these sections, to enable to replicated the exact ornament.

The moulds were then used to cast sections of the ornament, which were then fitted to the brickwork below.

The result of the restoration is in keeping with the original intention of the building and lift its appearance.
