Monument to Sir General Loftus Otway c1854

This mausoleum in Highgate West Cemetery had fallen into a general state of disrepair through time, neglect and vandalism.

Project aims

• Excavation of the external flat roof; the porch roof; the east cornice, and where requiredd, the masonry vault walls, in order to assess the condition of the mausoleum before treatment

• Secure the structural stability of the mausoleum where this is at risk, eg the east elevation of the porch roof and the east cornice

• Restore the exterior and interior of the mausoleum, reinstating 'lost' original features, such as the skylights
  

• Restore the external masonry, retaining as much original material as possible
  

• Clean the interior catacomb and the exterior stonework, removing damaging biological growth on the exterior such as moss and algae, while retaining desirable biological growth such as lichen
