WAR MEMORIALS
South Benfleet War Memorial 2006
Located at the centre of a busy junction, the memorial had suffered much from sulphation and soot build-up over the years.
After cleaning the stonework with the Doff system, some of the affected areas were saturated continuously with water in order to further soften tenacious soot deposits.
Wooden spatulas and brass wire brushes eliminated the more resistant staining.
The south-facing inscription had failed considerably: its incised, v-cut script was re-carved.
On completion it was felt that the memorial would be best protected by the application of several layers of lime wash shelter coating.
